Today marks one week without you.
For 3,412 days, I had the privilege of being your mama. These past seven days without you have been the loneliest, most heartbreaking of my life. But in that time, I’ve reflected on how you were so much more than a dog, you were a blessing.

You were kind to every person and animal you ever met. Patient and loving, without hesitation, without judgment. You were so funny. you made me smile and laugh every single day. We went through the worst of the worst and the best of the best together. No matter what, everything felt like it would be okay, simply because we were together.

Coming from such a hard past, you became my light. You always put others before yourself, making sure everyone was okay before you even cared about your own needs. I loved how you always said “I love you” back when I told you. How your big, goofy head would pop up when I pulled into the driveway. How you loved and hated the mailman and our neighbor Fred at the same time, making sure the whole neighborhood knew when the mail had arrived or when Fred was in the backyard.

I’ll never forget the way you would clear the couch with ease, yet still stand with your paws on the car seat waiting for a boost. How you licked the water off my legs every time I got out of the shower, or sat faithfully on the bath mat until I was done. At night, you always made sure to wedge yourself between mom and dabby, keeping a watchful eye to ensure no nonsense was happening on your watch.

You were our protector, our chaos, and somehow our calm. The best part of every single day. I can’t even describe how much I love and miss you. You saved my life. you know the story. Without my shadow, I feel lost. But I know I’ll see you again. I’m sure of it.
